Ritucharya Adhyaya

Ritucharya describes how to adapt diet and lifestyle to the six seasons. The year is divided into Adana Kala (the northern course of the sun, which drains strength) and Visarga Kala (the southern course, which restores strength).

Shishira (late winter) Heavy, unctuous food; oil massage and warm baths.
Vasanta (spring) Light, dry food; exercise and emesis to reduce kapha.
Grishma (summer) Sweet, cool and liquid food; rest in cool places.
Varsha (monsoon) Warm, easily digestible food; avoid river water.
Sharad (autumn) Bitter and sweet food; purgation to reduce pitta.
Hemanta (early winter) Nourishing food; digestive fire is strongest.
