Guggulu — the oleo-gum-resin of Commiphora wightii — is one of the most important and most versatile therapeutic substances in the entire Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, a resinous exudate from a small thorny shrub of the arid regions of western India that has been central to Ayurvedic medicine for over three thousand years. The substance — a brownish-yellow aromatic slightly sticky resin — is obtained by making incisions in the bark of the tree and collecting the resin that oozes out and hardens on exposure to air. Over-exploitation of wild populations has led to Commiphora wightii being listed as critically endangered in India — making sustainable sourcing from licensed cultivated sources an important ethical consideration for modern practitioners.

In Ayurvedic pharmacological classification Guggulu is described with the rare quality of being Yogavahi — capable of going wherever it is directed — a property that makes it an extraordinary vehicle for other medicinal substances, carrying them deeper into tissues and enhancing their therapeutic action. This Yogavahi quality explains the classical practice of combining Guggulu with other herbs in compound formulas where the Guggulu enhances the therapeutic reach of co-formulated herbs while simultaneously contributing its own direct actions. Its primary therapeutic actions are Lekhana (scraping away excess tissue and deposits), Shothaghna (anti-inflammatory) and Medohara (reducing excess fat tissue and lipid deposits).
